About the School Council

The role of a school councillor

Aid communication

  • Be a conduit from year groups to school council and vice versa
  • Share messages from teachers, other staff and governors
  • Share issues discussed in Collective Worship (e.g. look after equipment, anti-bullying safeguards)

Be a role model

Represent the school

  • Get involved with outside agencies needing to discuss things (Food4LIFE, Children’s Society)

Help and make things better

Help with the interview process to select new staff

Ground rules for discussion

  • Listen to each other – even if you disagree
  • Respect other people’s opinions (‘I hear/understand what you’re saying, however I think….’)
  • Take turns (don’t interrupt; ‘hands up’ indicates ‘me please’)
  • Think first before you speak
  • Don’t say silly things/impractical things
  • Stick to the point about what’s being said
  • Check everyone’s had a chance to speak e.g. a point is made and then maybe go round the circle
  • Be prepared to speak – work with Class Teacher to be ready and give a reason for any opinions
